Historical Society: Great House of Wessex

We are very sorry to have to announce that the scheduled talk for October, by Lisa Walker, on ‘A history of women’s rowing in Oxford’, has had to be cancelled.

However, we are delighted to announce that Lesley Best, from the Sylva Foundation in Long Wittenham, will come and talk about

The House of Wessex project

In 2016, the remains of an important Anglo-Saxon building were discovered on land at the Sylva Wood Centre in south Oxfordshire. Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and with support from volunteers, there are plans to reconstruct the house and launch a series of exciting education activities. Lesley will tell us about the dig carried out in 2017 by Oxford Archaeology and the University of Oxford Department of Continuing Education, and their plans for the future. [see the announcement of an open weekend elsewhere in this issue of Dorchester News]

Visitors and new members are always very welcome to our talks and outings.

Cost £3, members free
