Home > About DOTWeb

DOTWeb was founded following an initiative by Dorchester on Thames Parish Council to

establish a community website.   A small working group of volunteers was assembled to set up

and implement the project and the site was published on 1 October 2004.

It is intended that the site will grow to become a comprehensive guide to the social and

business life of the village as well as a mine of information for prospective visitors.

Although the content of the site is specific to Dorchester on Thames, inspiration has been

drawn from a number of village websites, most particularly from that of Deddington.

The aims of the website

·                    To provide a tourist guide to Dorchester and its facilities for visitors.

·                    To give local clubs, societies and community organisations an additional medium

by which to publicise and report their activities.

·                    To provide residents with a comprehensive guide to local services and businesses

            in an easy-to-find format.

·                    To provide links with other sites, both community and commercial, that augment the

            above aims.

The content of the website

Any social or business organisation that operates in the village may have an entry on the site.

·                    Clubs, societies, local charities and other ‘not-for-profit’ organisations may include, in

the directory pages of the site, a description of their aims and activities,

(up to 250 words), as well as basic postal, e-mail, and URL addresses, etc..   For

organisations without their own websites, additional web pages may be made available

at the discretion of the DOTWeb working group.

·                    Businesses are entitled to an entry or entries in the directory pages but limited to

50 words of description.  Additional pages can be linked to these entries but a fee

will be payable by the business.  Please contact the working group by feedback to

discuss requirements.   Help and advice can be given to businesses unfamiliar with

            creating web content.

A wide variety of pages on the site reflect the multifarious aspects of Dorchester village life;

parish council reports, the diary of events, local walks, places of interest, public services

and utilities, etc.   Links give access to the websites provided by other village institutions

such as the Abbey, the Hurst Water Meadow Trust and the school.

Although the Parish Council was responsible for initiating the project, it has no responsibility

for the content of the site other than that which it provides for its own pages.

Our code of conduct

·                    All submissions are checked to ensure they contain no material that is defamatory,

obscene, unlawful or otherwise offending common decency.   On this basis, DOTWeb

reserves the right to refuse any submission.

·                    We publish nothing of a personal nature without the persons consent unless the

information has already been placed by them in the public domain.

·                    Every attempt is made to ensure that information put onto the site is up-to-date and

accurate.   Please see our small print, which we include for legal reasons.

·                    Copyright permissions are sought for material published wherever appropriate.   Your

attention is drawn to our Copyright Conditions.

Who pays for the site?

The work done by the DOTWeb working group is entirely voluntary.  Web design and

maintenance are donated by dot-logix consulting.

The cost of the domains and web hosting is currently covered by an initial grant from

Dorchester on Thames Parish Council but it is expected that running costs will be met from

business revenues.
